Some people believe that unpaid community service should be compulsory part of high school programmes (for example working for a charity, improving the neighbourhood or teaching to younger children). To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Community
work
is historically known to bring benefits at the individual and societal levels.
Therefore
, many educators have suggested that
this
type of volunteer
work
should be made mandatory in high school programs.
However
, the adoption of
this
policy remains highly controversial. Opponents of
this
policy point out some disadvantages.
First
, they argue that
community
work
, in essence, should be volunteered and not forced on students, as teenagers may see
this
as a punishment rather than a learning opportunity.
Therefore
, they would do the bare minimum which would not benefit the organizations they are working for.
Furthermore
, some people advocate that many pupils do not have the appropriate training to perform some of the
community
work
for which they are assigned.
Although
the above arguments are plausible, I do not believe they outweigh the advantages of mandatory
community
work
. Through
this
type of activity, students may develop “soft skills” that are important for their lifetime,
such
as responsibility, dependability, getting along with others, and following directions.
Additionally
, if they engaged in those activities, they would have the opportunity to
work
with people from different backgrounds.
This
is particularly relevant as it could help them understand and embrace diversity.
Moreover
, pupils might find their future careers during
community
work
.
For instance
, a teenager working in the emergency department may discover a deep interest in medicine or nursing. Not only could they learn or find their careers through charity tasks but improve their health. Many students after school spend their days playing video games, watching tv or interacting on social media. Engaging them in compulsory
community
work
may increase their daily activity levels, essential for a healthy lifestyle. In conclusion, the benefits of compulsory
community
work
are numerous and on no account should preconceptions and budgetary constraints hamper its implementation.

Support ideas with relevant, specific examples

Examples make your writing easier to understand by illustrating points more effectively.

Examples, if used properly, not only help you get higher marks for ‘Task Response’ but also for ‘Coherence’.

When giving examples it is best to put them after your main idea or topic sentence. They can be used in the middle of supporting sentences or they can be used to start a new sentence. There is no rule for where exactly to give examples in essays, logically they would come after your main idea/topic sentence or just after a supporting sentence.

Linking words for giving examples:

  • for example
  • for instance
  • to illustrate this
  • to give a clear example
  • such as
  • namely
  • to illustrate
  • take, for example
