Some people believe that it is best to accept a bad situation, such as an unsatisfactory job or shortage of money. Others argue that it is better to try and improve such situations. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Many people, through no fault of their own, find themselves in unsatisfactory situations,
such
as an exploitative job, an abusive relationship, or poverty. The questions
then
arise as to what, if anything, they should do about
such
situations. Many, if not most, people tend to be overcome by inertia, and are inclined to accept
things
as they are, as the effort and risks involved in trying to ameliorate the
situation
are simply too great, and the chances of success too slim.
On the other hand
, there are those who never take an unsatisfactory
situation
lying down and feel that efforts must be made to do something, even if success is unlikely and those efforts are merely token. Personally, I feel that it is always better to take steps, even though they may be small, to improve a bad
situation
.
In other words
, it’s the struggle that counts as much as the outcome itself. Let us consider a worker whose only opportunity for employment is at a factory where the hours are long, the conditions dangerous, and the pay low. If
this
worker is the sole breadwinner for his or her family, it may be considered unwise to do anything to rock the boat,
such
as organize a strike for better pay and conditions, lest they lose their job and end up with no income at all.
This
is the ‘accept your lot in life’ approach, which many people would take. The thinking is, that
things
may be bad, but they could be worse. It’s better to just get on with life and maybe hope that
things
get better. But will they? I would say it is unlikely. A better approach is to look for ways to make differences,
however
small.
For example
, could there be a win-win
situation
in which workers are more productive and get paid more
as a result
? Managers, who tend to be only concerned with the company’s bottom line, might not see
things
from the point of view of the workers, who may be more awake to ways in which technology could be used to improve productivity. Or they may be more sensitive to intangibles
such
as the company’s standing in the community and see ways to lift it.
Such
gains may be small. They may not fix a fundamentally flawed system, but they are steps worth taking
nevertheless
. As long as we assess the risks carefully, it is always better to do something than to do nothing.
