Many offenders commit more crimes after serving the first punishment. Why is this happening, and what measures can be taken to tackle this problem?
Crime has been prevalent in our society from an early age through the many
years
of industrialization. In spite of the numerous punishments which have been served by the offenders, there have been instances of them committing more crimes after being released from prison. In this
essay, I will discuss and analyze the reasons for the above-mentioned statement as well as suggest certain measures that could be taken to tackle this
problem.
Firstly
, while most criminals have a psychological or mental condition being the reason for them to habitually relapse into crime after serving their first
sentence, others are sadists who would like to inflict and cause harm to their victims. Furthermore
, this
problem of recidivism is also
common among young prisoners who lack the education and employment benefits offered to people of similar age. In some countries, young children are grounded, given time-outs or made to do additional chores as a punishment for their wrong-doings at school. Disciplining the children and making them feel more responsible for their actions from a young age, would intimidate and cause them not to commit infractions in the future. This
would also
instil less fear in society when there is less number of felons out at large roaming the streets.
Secondly
, there have been more instances of recidivism happening when they are acquitted of crimes which have been for a longer time than expected. For example
in the Netherlands, prisoners can serve a sentence for a maximum of six years
. Those years
are spent educating and offering psychological support and rehabilitation to them confined within the four walls. Such
systems would make them less often to commit transgression in the future and make them active law-abiding citizens.
In conclusion, merely increasing the number of years
for petty transgression may not be the optimum solution for reducing the occurrences of heinous transgression. Psychological support and rehab services to the offenders would not only bring justice to the victims and their families but also
cause the offenders to respect and adhere to the law.Submitted by axyboy.raj on
