Writing a resume is controversial. Discuss your viewpoints on the argument.

My previous writings are mainly essays, reports, and emails to ask for
information
about courses’ lectures, services on campus, …
However
,
this
assignment
is to write a
resume
to apply for jobs, so there are some specific requirements in
format
and structure that I should follow.
Firstly
, because
this
document aims at seeking for a
job
, so
instead
of requesting
information
like in other writings (e.g inquiry email), we have to focus on providing
information
about ourselves
that is
relevant to the
job
.
Secondly
, while plain text is widely used in other types of documents (e.g email, essay), a
resume
requires
information
to be organized into particular sections with corresponding headlines.
Thirdly
, regarding the structure, these are some sections that are mandatory and specific to a
resume
: headers, education, experience, and others (skills, hobbies, awards).
Lastly
, writing a
resume
also
requires us to analyze the
job
descriptions
carefully beforehand so that only
information
relevant to the
job
is included in our
resume
. Through
this
assignment
, I have learned various useful lessons and
tips
on how to design a good
resume
.
Firstly
, the
information
provided in the “education” and “experience” sections should follow the reverse chronological order because
this
style makes the
information
easier for employers to follow.
Secondly
, I
also
learn some valuable
tips
to write
descriptions
in a
resume
effectively: (1) a good description should follow the
format
“Action verb + Project + Result” (2) the
descriptions
can be written more succinctly by eliminating non-essential phrases and quantifying accomplishments when possible.
Thirdly
, the most important lesson that I learn from
this
assignment
is that we should try to analyze the
job
descriptions
before starting writing our
resume
.
This
will help us to figure out important requirements of the
job
and after that, only
information
relevant to those requirements should be included and emphasized in our
resume
.
Last
summer, I did not pay much attention to
this
analysis step and just used a single
resume
to apply to multiple jobs simultaneously.
This
is a mistake because my previous
resume
did not emphasize specific skills required by each
job
and it
also
contains a lot of redundant
information
not related to the
job
. Fourthly, I
also
learn important
tips
to make my
resume
more suitable when applying to big companies that use ATS: (1) do not include headers, footers, tables or images (2) try to use standard headlines
such
as “work experience”.
Lastly
,
this
assignment
also
teaches me general
tips
to design a good
resume
such
as allowing white space, keeping the
format
consistent throughout the document. In the near future, there are some aspects that I need to consider when I have to write a
resume
again to apply for jobs or internships.
Firstly
, I will need to organize the
information
by following the standard structure for a
resume
: header, education, experience, others (skills, awards, hobbies).
This
might help my
resume
look more standard and familiar with the hiring teams.
Secondly
, for
information
in the ‘education’ and ‘experience’ section, I will represent them in the reverse chronological order to make it easier for readers to follow.
Thirdly
, for each
job
post, I will carefully analyze the
job
description and select appropriate
information
according to that
job
to include into my
resume
.
This
might help my
resume
look stronger and
as a result
, my chance for getting hired would be higher.
Lastly
, I will pay attention to other aspects that can help guarantee a good design of
resume
,
such
as keeping the
format
consistent throughout the document, avoiding spelling and grammar errors…

Structure your answers in logical paragraphs

The easiest way to score well on the IELTS Task 2 writing portion is to structure your writing in a solid essay format.

A strong argument essay structure can be split up into 4 paragraphs, each containing 4 sentences (except the conclusion paragraph, which only contains 3 sentences).

Stick to this essay structure:

  • Paragraph 1 - Introduction
  • Paragraph 2 - First supporting paragraph
  • Paragraph 3 - Second supporting paragraph
  • Paragraph 4 - Conclusion
