The line graph illustrates the percentage of the

who are 65 years and above within a century (1940 to 2040) in the USA, Sweden and Japan. Overall, there will be upward trends over the time period in all three countries. There will be a slow rise in the
population
aged 65 and over in the USA, Japan will see a significant rise by the estimated year's end, whiles Sweden will record a moderate incline in the
population
of the elderly. With regards to the year 1940, all the three countries had a few elderly people,
that is
a small proportion, less than 10%, but by 1980, there was an increase in the aged proportion in the USA and Sweden,
on the other hand
, Japanese older
population
saw a decrease.
However
, all three countries have been recording higher percentages of the elderly
population
, and it is estimated to rise in the subsequent years, up to 2040. A striking percentage will be seen in Japan where there will be a sharp increase in the number of older people who are alive, from nearly 10% to more than one-half of
this
figure.
