The table gives information about the number of male, female, and total employees and
factories
in England and Wales between 1851 and 1901. Overall
, opposite to the employment trend, the number of factories
increase over the 50-year period from 225 to 600. An instability growth is illustrated with the plateau in the first ten-year and a significant increase in the last
period although
a fluctuation from 1871 to 1881.
During these 50 years, male and female labor in factories
decreased: at the beginning, a large number of men worked in factories
compared to women. Both trends declined to show a final rate of about 30.000: while
men’s diminution showed fluctuation, women employment gradually declined.
According to
gender trends, total employment fell throughout the given period; from 1851 to 1861, there was a dramatic decline of about 100.000 employers whereas
