As transparent from the chart, the percentage of expenditure on food accounted for the lion’s share of well over two-fifths (44%) in 1996, followed by cars with 23%, more than half of the latter. Spending on furniture, petrol, restaurants and books consisted of similar proportions, ranging from 6% - 10%, leaving the remaining share at merely 1% for computers.
