An increasing number of people are choosing to have cosmetic surgery in order to improve their appearance. Why are more people choosing to have operation to change the way they look? Do you think this a positive or negative development? Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Nowadays, there is an upward trend of cosmetic
surgery
in which
people
are choosing to improve their
appearance
by passing through an operating room.
This
could be because of the importance of the
appearance
and youth. In my opinion, I consider that
this
is not beneficial at all for their bodies and their beings as they are forcing themselves to be something
that is
not natural for them, something
that is
fake at some point, only to be liked by
people
.
To begin
with, it seems that wishing “better”
appearance
is something very common these days.
In other words
,
people
are more worried about weight, beauty and youth than their own lives.
For instance
, it has been claimed that 60% of
people
from 25 to 50 years old are getting at least one cosmetic
surgery
, passing from Botox to breast implants and much more. Social pressure has been growing lately, demanding
people
they have to look good, fit, young and happy.
Consequently
,
people
have been drowned in desperation trying many things to improve quickly their
appearance
, but when they realize
that is
not possible, they opt to get an operation
instead
. Regarding
this
,
people
have been manipulated over the decades to be convinced that the way you look is more important than who you really are and want to be.
In addition
to
this
, the principle of immediacy has
also
impacted negatively on
people
, who have been obsessed with getting everything fast.
For example
, there are statistics of
people
who went through cosmetic
surgery
proving that the main reason for choosing the operation was because they used to feel depressed as they could not accept their bodies, feeling shame by themselves and covering their bodies to not be exposed to jokes.
This
is clear proof of how harmful social judgement could be.
Subsequently
, having cosmetic
surgery
is causing a very negative effect on
people
and society as a whole because of the “invisible” message behind all
this
, which is “being fake and pretending is more important than who you really are”. In conclusion, even if the increase in cosmetic
surgery
is a huge business for medical professionals and pharmaceutics, I am convinced that it is a completely negative development. We cannot deny that the modern principles of immediacy and superficiality are catastrophic for
people
who do not fit in the hegemonic society, and who try to be liked
instead
of loving themselves.
This
is a critical issue in which all of us should compromise to speak up and defend principles
such
as love and acceptance.

Word Count

IELTS says that you should write a minimum of 250 words in writing task 2. If you go under word count you will lose marks in task response.

A very long essay will not give you a higher band score.

Aim for between 260 to 290 words in writing task 2. This will ensure a concise essay and will be realistic in terms of time management. You have only 40 minutes to write the essay and you need around 10 minutes of planning time, so you will not be able to write a long essay in 30 minutes.
