The line diagram compares the proportion of the
population
in the
Philippines
,
Malaysia
,
Thailand
, and
Indonesia
who lives in the cities over a period of 70 years.
It is clear that
all four countries' city
population
proportion was and will be growing from the years 1970 to 2040.
Malaysia
's city
population
percentage surpassed the
Philippines
' percentage in 1990 and became the country with the highest city
population
proportion among these four countries. In the year 1970, the
Philippines
was in the leading position, with just over 30% of its national
population
living in the cities, followed by
Malaysia
,
Thailand
, and
Indonesia
, with 30%, approximately 19%, and 14%, respectively. After almost two decades of having a lower percentage than
Malaysia
, the
Philippines
came back to the leading position with just under 50% in 1990.
However
, a declining trend occurred soon after that year, going down almost 10%. One noticeable thing was that
Indonesia
's figure took over
Thailand
's and the
Philippines
' in the years 2000 and 2010, respectively, and became the runner-up with just over 40% in 2010. Looking into the future, it is predicted that in 2020
Thailand
will have a drastic rise in its figure,
while
the other three countries will be having stable growths. In the year 2040,
Malaysia
will have over 80% of its residents living in the cities. Meanwhile,
Indonesia
, the
Philippines
, and
Thailand
will have approximately 60%, 50%, and 45%,
accordingly
.
