of Fairtrade-labelled coffee and bananas in five countries in Europe from 1999 to 2004.

Overall

, all five countries experienced a growth in the

sales

of coffee.

Besides

, banana

sales

saw a rise in all, except

Sweden

and Denmark. With regard to the first graph,

it is clear that

the

sales

of coffee in Switzerland were twice as high as that in the UK, which stood at 3 and 1.5 million

euros

, respectively.

While

sales

in the former doubled in 2004, those in the latter rose significantly to 20 million (20m). The figures for Denmark, Belgium, and

Sweden

were altogether responsible for more than 3m

euros

,

whereas

the first two reached a high of nearly 2m

euros

, the

sales

in

Sweden

remained relatively stable. Shifting the focus to the second one, it is apparent that there was a considerable increase in the

sales

of bananas in Switzerland, which rose approximately threefold from 15m

euros

to 47m. The

in Denmark were

initially

twice as high as that in the UK, at 2m and 1m, respectively. The former almost halved to reach 0.9m,

however

, the figure for the latter increased over fivefold to reach 5.5m. When it comes to Belgium and

in the second country were originally three times as high as that in the first one. The former experienced a high increase of 3.4m,
