The chart below shows estimated world illiteracy rates by region and by gender for the year 2000
The bar chart illustrates data regarding the estimated proportions of men and women who could not write or read in six different parts of the world in 2000.Units are measured in percentages.
Overall
,what stands out from the graph is that illiteracy rates in South Asia were the highest.
Furthermore
,in developed countries, there were almost no illiterate people. Looking into detail, in Sub-Saharan Africa,Arab states and South Asia ,the percentage of men and women was almost the same.
While
the figure for the former in these areas accounted for around one-third,
this
number for the latter was responsible for about 50%. Shifting the focus to the other parts of the globe,in developed countries, projected illiteracy rates were too low and comprised approximately 3% for both genders. The share of males and females who were not able to write or read in Latin America/Caribbean was the same( one in ten).Meanwhile,in East Asia/Oceania,the calculated illiteracy ratio for women was twice as much as that for men(20% and 10% respectively).
