The diagram below depicts the transformation of a village, called Chorleywood from 1868 to 1994.
Overall
, the rural development was divided into four phases
according to
its population growth. The major transformation occurred in 1970 when a motorway was developed. In detail, when the population density was still low in 1868-1883, there was only one area of housing which was located in the bottom left-hand corner of the main road. As the population grew rapidly, more constructions were added.
For example
, in 1909, the residential area was extended
along with
the addition of a railway across the main road. The newly residential area built was three times larger than the old one.
In addition
, a train station was constructed inside that housing.
Moreover
, more houses were built from 1922 until 1994.
Besides
, a motorway
as well as
a roundabout were developed and took place on the right-hand side of the map. Surrounding that motorway, many areas of houses were
also
built.
