The column chart illustrates people owning and renting houses rates in England and Wales from 1918 to 2011.
Overall
, As is obvious, contrary to the rise in the number of individuals who owned accommodations during
this
period, the percentage of others who rented residences had plunged. It seems that people’s ability to purchase accommodations has improved over time. In 1918, the proportion of owners was approximately 20%, meanwhile, the share of renters was hardly 70%. After that time, homeowners’ numbers saw a dramatic growth, to 60% in 2011 respectively. After the sharp increase, the data experienced a graduate decline in 2001.
However
, for about 10 years, from 1939 to 1953, the number of households in rented residences remained stable but afterwards, they started a dropping trend. The numbers decreased significantly from 1953 to 2011 to 40% per year. 1971 saw an equivalent rate in both renters and owners rates which stood at 50% of the total.
