time
it takes to do housework kept drastically decreasing from 1920 to 1980 as the percentage of
houses
equipped with
refrigerators
and vacuum cleaners were all climbing up in the same period of
time
. The
refrigerators
have been the most popular household electrical appliance ever since 1920 when its ownership was zero. Meanwhile, the washing machines and the vacuum cleaners had been installed in 40% and 30% of the
houses
, respectively. The percentage of installation of
refrigerators
was always rising until 1980 when the figure was 100% and remained unchanged for the next 40 years. A similar pattern took place in the ownership of vacuum cleaners but the peak showed up 20 years later than that of
refrigerators
in 2000. The washing machines were installed in 70% of
houses
in 1960.
