You have heard a developer plans to build a shopping center near your home. Write a letter.

✨ Do you want to improve your IELTS writing?
Dear Sir or Madam, I am writing to ask for a complete itinerary of a shopping mall which is being built by your company in 67 Main Street, NYC. By the way, I want to inform you that, I heard about the mall, if I am not mistaken, a couple of days ago from a friend of mine. Actually, I am Rachel Green who lives in 66 Main Street, apartment 26, NYC. I wonder if I possibly get the mall project before it is built. If your building closes my window when the Sun rises, I will replace it with another wall (there is no problem for me which makes you feel uncomfortable). I would like to receive it as soon as possible but not later than two weeks before the flight to the UK for a wedding. I really appreciate it if you could send the above-mentioned information to my e-mail or fax. Yours faithfully, Rachel Green.

coherence and cohesion
Consider providing a clearer structure by separating your request for the itinerary and your concerns about the impact on your property into distinct paragraphs. This will enhance readability and clarity.
task achievement
Use a more formal tone. For example, instead of saying 'If your building closes my window when the Sun rises,' you might say 'I am concerned that the construction may obstruct my views and natural light.'
task achievement
You have addressed the recipient appropriately and included your contact information, which is important in a formal letter.
task achievement
Your request for information is clear, and you have indicated a specific timeframe for the response, which is helpful.

Structure your letter

A letter needs to be written using a proper format, including the following:

  • A greeting (Dear sir/madam, Dear John, Dear Mr. Smith)
  • The main body (consisting of paragraphs for each part of the letter)
  • A closing (Yours sincerely, Yours faithfully, Best wishes, Kind regards, Love)

When writing a letter as part of the IELTS General Training Writing Task 1, it is important to include the bullet points presented to you in the question.

All three bullet points need to be presented. And remember that some bullet points contain more than one element. So, make sure to watch for ‘and’ and plurals.
