changed in England from 1985 to 2000. Overall, the car was by far the most used form of transport in both years. As can be seen from the data, the average distance covered by a person through car, long distance bus, train and taxi has increased in the year 2000, compared to the year 1985. On an average, a person used to
travel
3199 miles by car in 1985, which rose to 4,806 in 2000. Over the period of 15 years, the miles travelled through long distance bus and train
also
increased from 54 and 289 to 124 and 366 respectively.
Travel
by taxi saw the most significant change, which climbed from 13 miles per person per year in 1985 to 42 miles in 2000.
On the contrary
, there was a decline in the modes of
travel
like walking, bicycle and local bus. In 1985, people walked an average of 255 miles, but
this
figure decreased to 18 miles in 2000.
This
trend was more significant in the use of local buses since their usage fell from 429 in 1985 to 274 in 2000. Bicycle use fell from 51 to 41 miles over the period shown. All other modes of
travel
above saw a noticeable rise about 135 miles in 2000.
