Yearly, we see thousands of
students
graduating from the university struggling to adapt to work-life. Even when they performed excellently well at school, they don't seem to have the required soft
skills
to work in a
team
.
This
is caused because schools focus more on technical
skills
. In
this
essay, I will discuss the main reason for
this
and what can be done to solve
this
problem. The primary cause of
this
issue is that schools focus more on technical training and less of people
skills
.
For instance
, a student studying engineering will be taught more on engineering
skills
and less of interpersonal and
team
management
skills
.
Thus
when
such
a student graduates, he finds it difficult to cope in the real world. I will discuss the solutions below.
Firstly
, the school curriculum needs to be reviewed by the Ministry of Education. They need to include management and leadership development
courses
into their teachings.
For instance
,
courses
on high performing teams and leadership fundamentals should be included for year two and three
students
.
Also
, tertiary institutions should focus on
team
projects and not on just personal assignments and projects.
For example
, final year's project should be a
team
project and not an individual project.
Lastly
, all tertiary
courses
should do a one-year industrial attachment program. Currently, some art and social science
courses
don't do
this
and others that do, do it for six months. To conclude, the current school system focuses more on technical know-how and less of soft
skills
.
This
has led to the difficulty of graduating
students
blending in in a work environment. The major responsibility lies with the Ministry of Education and the Tertiary institutions to review the current curriculum and includes more industrial attachments, management training and
team
projects. If all these are done, the graduating
students
from our schools will fit into organizations.
