, industrial and homes across the world between 1990 and 2000, and

used by

Brazil

and the Democratic Republic of Congo in 2000 It is apparent that overall the global needs for

water

rose significantly for the period shown, and that

agriculture

accounted for the most

use

of

water

. We can

also

see that

water

consumption in

Brazil

was considerably higher than in the Congo. In 1990, around 500 km3 of

water

used by the

agriculture

sector worldwide; whereas, the figures for industrial and domestic

water

use

stood at around one-fifth of that amount. By 2000, global

use

of

water

in the

agriculture

field skyrocketed dramatically over 3000 km3, industrial

water

use

had risen to just under half that amount, and domestic consumption had reached approximately 500 km3. In 2000, the population of

Brazil

and the Congo were 176 million and 5.2 million respectively.

Water

consumption per person in

Brazil

, at 359m3, was much higher than that in the Condo, at only 8m3, and

could be explained by the fact that

had 265 times more irrigated land (265,000 km3).
