of the MEKO 360 series of destroyers built for the Argentine
Navy
. The ship
is also
the third ship
in the Argentine
Navy
to bear that name. Sarandí is the name of a victory of the Argentine
army during the Cisplatine War. 2. Origin Sarandí and her sisters’ ships were authorized by a Naval Construction National Plan in 1974, an initiative lead by the Argentine
Navy
to replace old World War II vintage warships which were almost at the end
of their operational life. The contract was signed with Blohm + Voss Shipyards in Hamburg, West Germany, for the construction of four MEKO 360 destroyers. 3. General characteristics Class and type: Almirante Brown-class destroyer

was delivered to the Argentine
Navy
on 23 April 1984 in order to perform the sea trials. Then
, the Destroyer
departed for Argentina, arriving at Puerto Belgrano Naval Base on 21 June 1984. 5. Service history During his service the ship
participated in a wide variety of International Operations such
as, FRATERNO, BILATERAL, UNITAS and ATLASUR. In 2003, Sarandi joined the USS Enterprise Carrier Strike Group and Destroyer
Squadron 18 as a part of the Exercise “Solid Step” during their tour in the Mediterranean. This
marked the first time that an Argentine
Navy
ship
inter-operated with a United States Navy
battlegroup. It is currently based at Puerto Belgrano as the flagship of the Navy
's Destroyer
