Large businesses have big budgets for marketing and promotion and as result, people gravitate towards buying their products. What problems does this cause? What could be done to encourage people to but local products?

Advertisements play a very crucial role in a consumer's decision making while buying any product. Due to the monetary advantage that large
businesses
have over the small
ones
, a lot of money is invested in advertisements and promotions of their
products
, which in turn drives
consumers
to buy these
products
. In
this
essay, we would be discussing few problems that are caused by
this
along with some suggestions that could help people to choose the local alternatives.
Consumers
purchasing
products
only from large
businesses
or chains has an adverse effect on the local producers and small
businesses
around the area. Due to the monetary constraints of these daily wage workers, they cannot afford to invest in advertising their
products
. Due to
this
, the consumer population might not be even aware of the existence of the wide range of
products
that could be available locally. Another problem with the bulk marketing of the
products
could be the quality of
products
. As per the general trend, it's noticed that the locally available alternatives are of much higher quality than the
ones
which are available in the large markets. Let's take an example for a grocery product - tomatoes. The
ones
available in large markets which are bulk produced would be available as a cheaper option to the
consumers
.
However
, the locally grown
ones
would take a hit because they won't be able to recover their initial investment itself. One of the major factors that could drive the
consumers
towards local
products
is by making these
products
readily available to them.
This
could be made possible by having the large companies buy a section of their produce from the local market as well. When the
consumers
are provided with options, they would naturally go for the
ones
with higher quality.
This
gives a fair chance for the local producers to be in the market and establish a consumer base. To conclude,
consumers
must be made be aware of the locally available alternatives with respect to the
products
that are bought through large companies.
This
is possible by introducing a hybrid model where both the large companies and local
businesses
can co-exist in harmony.
