Some people think that all university students should study whatever they like. Others believe that they should only be allowed to study subjects that will be useful in the future, such as those related to science and technology.

Engineering is the most male-dominated profession in Sri Lanka, with women accounting for only 1% of the engineering workforce due to the masculine culture of engineering itself. My family is an extended family, and I am the only girl among the children, and all my cousins were men, I learned how to compete with them by mastering skills not only related to education but
also
related to
life
that are necessary for surviving in society. Since all of them are professionally engaged in the electrical and electronic industry, I always dreamt of getting a profession in the engineering field. Education has always been primary in my
life
, despite my extracurricular activities
such
as exercising and listening to music. The undergraduate classes which were conducted in the English language, that I was able to stand out the most are “probability and statistics”, “mathematical methods”, “calculus”, “waves and vibrations and AC theory” and “data communication techniques”, which by the way assured that I had made the right decision to become an engineer in the electrical and electronics field. My passion for engineering became my self an engineer, and within a short period of time, I was able to promote to a senior position that involves not only engineering but
also
managing people. I am proud to say that I was the
first
lady engineer in the
company
, and the benefits that I could achieve by implementing the “Reliability Centered Maintenance” program were able to encourage my
company
to recruit more female engineers; at the present, there are more than twenty female engineering professionals working in different manufacturing plants in my
company
, here in Sri Lanka. In 2018, I was awarded the “International top scholarship award” by Mobius Institute Australia, to follow machinery vibration analysis up to ISO level II, and I travelled to Australia to participate in the “CBM Conference” held in November 2019 in Melbourne, as the honoured guest of the conference. In Australia, I was able to sit for the “Asset Reliability Practitioner” certification exam conducted by the institute and I was certified as the
first
Sri Lankan who was certified as an “Assets Reliability Practitioner”. I am
also
an active member of “Mobius Connect Community” which is an online platform that many engineers are sharing their knowledge. I believe my background demonstrates a steady yet rapid progression in the engineering field, and I am eager to continue that progression by enrolling in the MSc program. After finishing my studies, I intend to return to my current
company
and apply what I saved from the master’s program towards the
company
's goodwill. Because I am one of the top three certified condition monitoring professionals in the country, I am confident that I will be offered the same position. Afterwards, I plan to pursue a doctorate in “Robotics and Automation Engineering”. I intend to complete these objectives within the
next
five years. When all is said and done, and I look back on my
life
and evaluate the numerous positive contributions I have made to society, only
then
will I be satisfied and able to call my
life
a complete success. Thank you for your consideration and time.
