Society today has been brainwashed to believe that beauty must look like models and actors shown in magazines, television and movies.
This
has caused more and more
people
to undergo plastic
surgeries
. While I do not have any reservations with reconstructive
surgeries
which are performed to improve an abnormal feature due to trauma, birth defects, tumours, and infection, I have serious reservations with cosmetic procedures performed to improve the patient's physical features on the instance of the patient. In
this
essay, I will discuss why I believe that limits must be set on the extent to which one can obtain cosmetic
surgeries
,
although
I am not totally against the
procedure
.
To begin
with, plastic
surgery
could help align one's natural
appearance
with their desired
appearance
. Some examples of these procedures include facial reconstruction, breast enlargement and body contouring.
This
realignment appears to be the
first
and main benefit of the
procedure
.
People
who are unhappy with some aspect of their
appearance
and desperately want it changed can opt for
such
a
procedure
. Another benefit is the improvements it brings to one's confidence.
This
does wonder for the social life and mental health of the patient.
Therefore
, the
procedure
has some psychological benefits.
Despite these benefits, the
procedure
portends danger and disadvantages that outweigh these merits.
First
is the huge cost involved. It is no secret that cosmetic
surgeries
are expensive. It can be difficult to save up money for it and some
people
often take loans for
this
purpose. To
then
have the
surgery
outcome not meet up with the individual's expectations could lead to depression. For those who can afford it, it could lead to addiction, whereby the individual continuously finds faults and flaws with their
appearance
, resulting in multiple
surgeries
. These
surgeries
could permanently damage muscles and skin tissues.
Finally
,
although
uncommon, death can happen during and after the
procedure
.
This
can occur due to a reaction to anaesthesia or due to pre-existing health history of the person.
In conclusion,
although
cosmetic
surgery
could improve the mental and social well-being of
people
, I believe that a limit to the number of the cosmetic
surgery
a person can have should be limited due to the risk of death, the chance of addiction and post-
surgery
depression when expectations for the
procedure
are not met.
