In spite of the many advances women have made in education and employment, they continue to be at a disadvantage when it comes to pay and promotion. In your view, what should be done to promote equality of opportunity for men and women in the workplace?

In contemporary society,
although
women
have made huge strides in the labour market, they still tend to get lower salaries and fewer top jobs than
men
. In
this
essay, the measures of how to deal with
gender
inequality in the workplace will be discussed.
Governments
should introduce policies to force
companies
in the private sector to employ equal numbers of
men
and
women
and to offer the same chances to be promoted.
This
method could indeed tackle the problem in a quick way.
However
, some firms might not be willing to cooperate as male workers are more helpful to increase productivity in doing certain tasks
such
as car maintenance, coal mining, and logging, which require more physical labour. Another effective method would be for
governments
themselves to take the lead by hiring equivalent numbers of male and female staff in civil departments and making sure that they earn similar wages for doing the equivalent work.
This
would surely be a good example setting to show society the importance of maintaining
gender
equality.
However
, it would be hard to make sure that other enterprises would follow the suit. A more feasible method would be for
companies
to give the same length of maternity leave to each
gender
. In many cases, firms refuse to promote or give a higher salary to their
women
staff because they are worried about those females may one day get pregnant
thus
leaving their position for a long time. If males and females were offered the same paid family leave, there would not exist
such
bias towards female employees. In conclusion,
governments
and
companies
are both responsible for promoting equality of opportunity for
men
and
women
in the workplace.
Governments
could enact laws or modal good examples to hire equal numbers of
men
and
women
to ensure
gender
equality.
Companies
can provide the same paid family leave to both genders to alleviate the discrimination against female employees.
