Food travels thousands of miles from producers to consumers. Some people think that it would be better for the environment and economy if people only ate the local food produced by farmers. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
Nowadays it is absolutely normal for
food
to be one of the biggest components in

. This
hasn't always been the case, and today some members of the public call for significantly reducing the volume of transferred food
, or even eliminating the food
trade
completely, due to both environmental and economic concerns. While it is true that in some cases it is better for everyone to shorten the logistic chains, I disagree with the end objective of cancelling the global provision market.
First
, there is totally no doubt that it only helps the economic development if the range of goods that consumers can buy stays as wide as possible. At the same time, any attempts to impose restrictions or limits on what can be imported never lead to anything but market disbalance and lower satisfaction of the buyers, which consequently
hurts both small and big businesses. As an example, in Russia importing food
from the European Union was forbidden in 2014, which became one of the main reasons of
the Change preposition

slowdown that followed.
Replace the word

Second
, although
the environmental aspect at least deserves a discussion, it is also
not a good reason to stop buying and selling food
globally. Unlike a few decades ago, today there is a big variety of sustainable approaches to transport cargo. If the regulations are properly followed by all parties that participate in trade
processes, the resulting total impact on the environment could be even lower than in the case of short logistic chains with inefficient local producers, such
as farmers. Especially that, for instance
, small producers often don't have access to modern vehicles that reduce carbon emissions.
In conclusion, claims that it would be better for everyone to return to only consuming locally produced food
, are rather baseless. The negative consequences of the potential cancellation of the global food
trade
would outweigh the positive ones. And most importantly, there are ways to keep the provision logistic chains both efficient and sustainable.Submitted by chugreevd on
