Some people argued that higher institutions
students
should study their desired
courses
while others think that they should only study
science
and
technology
-related
courses
that will be beneficial later in life. In my opinion, I believe that generally,
students
should be allowed to enrol on their course of choice while incentives like scholarships should be introduced in order to encourage enrollment in
science
and
technology
courses
because of their importance.
On the one hand, many believe that it is a good practice that
students
should apply for the programme of their interest in the university.
For example
, the passion I have for infrastructural development made me enrol in Civil Engineering at the university. In order words, when people study the course of their choice is a testament to the passion they have for that field, and
this
will make their contribution to knowledge to be genuine.
Furthermore
,
this
will
also
benefit society in terms of skills demand for various sectors of the economy.
On the other hand
, many believe that
science
and
technology
should be made compulsory in higher education because they are very important to the
future
of the
country
.
For example
, the contributions of
science
and
technology
, in the adoption of robots to transport foods and equipment, and the development of contact tracing applications, have helped to reduce the effect of coronavirus at the peak of the pandemic.
Therefore
, the larger the percentage of graduates in
science
and
technology
, the safer the
country
will be in the
future
.
This
is
also
evident in the manufacturing of the vaccine that was eventually used to curb the spread of the coronavirus in society.
In my opinion,
students
should have the freedom to choice of
courses
for admission,
however
, due to the importance of
science
and
technology
, incentives like scholarships and subsidies should be given in order to encourage many prospective
students
to enrol for these programmes.
This
will assist the government to easily achieve its target for the required number of
science
and
technology
graduates required for the
country
.
In summary, though freedom of admission into interested programmes should be allowed,
however
, the governing body should apply incentives to entice
future
students
into
science
and
technology
programmes at the university level due to the importance of
this
sector to the
future
of the
country
.
