The line graph illustrates a clear difference in the pattern of male and female gym membership over a thirty-year period. The vertical axis represents the number of members in units of 1000. The horizontal axis represents the period from 1980 to 2010. By far, the gap between the two is particularly noticeable for years between 1980 and 1990 and from 2000 to 2007, with the highest discrepancy of enrollment in 2005: 5000 men subscribed to the gym compared with just 2900 women. The gap between the two was approximately the same in 1985. It is noteworthy that there was a more marked fluctuation in gym membership among men than among women over the years: starting at just over 2100 in 1980, the figure increases to a local maximum of almost 4000 in 1985 before experiencing a decline, falling to less than 2000 between 1995 and 2000. The figure rises again up to an absolute maximum of nearly 5000 in 2005, before dropping sharply to a low of 600 in 2010.
By contrast
, figures for women followed an upward trend with a high of 2800 entries both in 1995 and 2007 and a low of 1100 in 1980.
