Controversy has emerged about whether human beings should use leisure time for activities that improve
brain
ability or for resting. People often claim that brains are already overloaded in the workplace and adequate
rest
is necessary. From my perspective,
however
, both
brain
training and recovery are vital for mental health. On the
one
hand, activities
such
as reading, card
games
and strategy
games
reinforce the
brain
circuit. Individuals gain information from reading and utilising
such
information and transfer it into intelligence. Puzzle
games
force brains to think in different aspects.
For instance
, Go players have to calculate every step to expand their territory, simultaneously, read rivals' moves and try to destroy their plans. These kinds of
brain
exercises make
one
's thoughts more logical and innovative.
On the other hand
, facing the high-pressure work environment, the public needs to relax. Research into psychology provides considerable evidence that adequate
rest
improves the stability of mental health.
For example
, psychotherapy
such
as hiking or travelling gradually become the norm. The only thing that patients need is to
rest
temporarily. In my opinion, intellect training is like bodybuilding -
one
needs enough practice and adequate time to recover. Both overuse and underuse can cause adverse impacts, high risk of mental illness and lack of idea respectively. By way of conclusion, activities like puzzle
games
improve people's logical and innovative ability and
rest
prevent our brains from information overload and mental illness. It is important to find the balance between training and
rest
for
one
's leisure time.
