year's global illiteracy rates divided by geographical areas and gender. It is impossible not to notice how the female illiteracy rate greatly exceeds the male one in all the continents mentioned in the chart.

, in developed countries, gender inequality is less accentuated and it is possible to affirm that the mean education level is the highest among the below-mentioned continents.

the Arab States and South Asia are the countries with the highest illiteracy rate. More specifically, male rates oscillate around 30 per cent, but female rates are almost double going from 45 per cent in Sub-Saharan Africa to more than 65 per cent in South Asia. The area with the highest disparity remains East Asia in which the number of illiterate women exceeds the number of men more than twice. In conclusion, it is possible to say that women have a greater percentage of illiterates compared to men.
