The tables present how Fairtrade-labelled coffee and bananas were sold in five different nations in Europe in the years 1999 and 2004.
It is clear that
there was an upward tendency in the sale of coffee in all countries. However
, banana sales in Sweden and Denmark decreased, while
the opposite was true for the other regions.
As can be seen, the UK sold only 1.5 million
euros of coffee in 1999, compared to 3 million
in Switzerland. Over 5 years, the figure for that in the former climbed significantly to 20 million
, whereas
the latter doubled. Moreover
, Denmark and Sweden's proportions stood at 1.8 and 0.8 million
respectively at first before rising by 0.2 million
in 2004. Belgium also
witnessed an increase from 1 to 1.7 million
within 5 years.
Regarding banana sales, in 1999, Switzerland was recorded to be at the top of the list with 15 million
euros, then
it kept growing and reached a peak of 47 million
in 2004. Additionally
, the UK and Belgium took up 5.5 and 4.6 million
severally at the end
of the period after being at 1 and 0.6 million
at the beginning. By contrast
, Sweden and Denmark experienced a decline from approximately 2 million
in 1999 to about 1 million
after half a decade.Submitted by danphamngocha on
