Today much of the food people eat gets transported from farms that are thousands of miles away. Some people believe it would be better for the environment and the economy if people only consumed food produced by local farmers. Would the advantages of this outweigh the disadvantages?

In modern days, our diet has been affected drastically by communication and transportation advancements. Nowadays our knowledge about various food cultures
as well as
our ability to move agricultural
products
cost-effectively has led to great variety in our daily meals.
However
,
this
could create major financial and ecological problems. On the warm hand, growing different
products
in the regions that are best suited for those kinds of plants, results in a significant decrease in natural and economical needed sources.
For instance
, producing plants that demand high amounts of water like rice in dry areas, requires significant endeavour in order to provide water.
In contrast
, growing low water-demanding
products
in that region and importing rice could protect water resources
as well as
save a considerable amount of money.
However
, many experts believe that in most regions, the variety of local agricultural
products
is more than enough for the residents to have a complete diet and maintain their health. So, we are constantly wasting a significant amount of time and money, just to experience a new fashion. In conclusion, I think we could benefit from variable food
products
, that come from distant regions as long as we do
this
in moderation and choose a diet, which is mostly based on local
products
. In
this
manner, we could not only develop an efficient agriculture system, but we
also
don’t waste excessive resources on import and export costs.
