time
they spent doing housework in a particular country, over a century, from 1920 to 2019.
Overall
, while
the rate
of electrical machine ownership grew over time
, the number of hours people had to spend doing housework declined.
In 1920, 30% of families owned vacuum
cleaners. The rate
for washing machines was slightly higher, at 40%. It is interesting that almost no family had a refrigerator in 1920. Over the next 20 years, the proportion of households which owned a refrigerator jumped to more than 50% and took over the figure for the vacuum
cleaner, which was at 50%. The washing machine’s possessing rate
also
improved to 60%. Looking at the amount of time
people spent doing chores in the same time
frame, it decreased from 50 hours per week in 1920 to well under 40 in 1940.
By 1960, both figures for washing machines and vacuum
cleaners had reached 70%. The percentage of owning refrigerators rose sharply to 90%. However
, over the next 20 years, it peaked at 100% and remained constant until the end of the period in question. The rate
for vacuum
cleaners continued to improve until 2000 when it rose to 100% and remained steady. The proportion of people who possessed washing machines witnessed a slight reduction in 1980,
but continued to rise slowly until it reached more than 70% in 2019. In 1960, households used to spend 20 hours per week doing housework. Despite experiencing a drop to less than 20 in 1980, Remove the comma
