You have seen an advertisement in an Australian magazine for someone to live with a family for six months and look after their six-year-old child. Write a letter to the parents. In your letter • explain why you would like the job • give details of why you would be a suitable person to employ • say how you would spend your free time while you are in Australia

Dear Sir or Madam, It is my pleasure to write to you for the position which you have advised in an Australian magazine. From your advertisement, I have learned that you need a person who is able to live with you and look after a child who is 6 years old. Let me explain to you why I am a suitable person for
this
position in detail. The first thing I would like to address is to explain the reason why I am interested in
this
spot. The reason would be that I am good at taking care of
children
, and deep down, child care is my passion, and I would like to become a professional child carer in the future. The second reason is that I have the experience of looking after
children
.
This
means that I fully understand what a person needs to do if he or she is a carer because I had a job which is a day-care centre job. In detail, looking after
children
means that I need to babysit
children
.
In addition
, I need to cook meals for
children
.
Last
, I need to spend at least 2 hours reading books for
children
and playing suitable games with
children
.
Therefore
, I believe that I have experience which is suitable for your requirements. The second thing I would like to express is what I do in my free time when I am in your country. I will be in your country around next month, and I am available from 10 am to 6pm for work. My free time is at night. I think I will go for a walk after work and perhaps I will go movies once a month. I love reading as well, if I am not going out, I might just stay at home to read. I hope I have answered all your questions and if you do have any, please contact me with any hesitation. Have a nice day! Looking forward to your reply. kind regards,

The Greeting

Depending on the style and aim of the letter, you will need to adapt your greeting.

Always start an informal letter in the ways:

  • Dear + name
  • Hi / Hello + name

‘Dear...’ is more appropriate, so stick with this.

For a formal letter there are two options for the greeting:

  • Use Dear Sir or Madam if you don’t know the name of the person you are writing to.
  • Use Dear + surname if you do know their name, e.g. Dear Mr Smith or Dear Mrs Jones.
