The chart below contains information provided by Australia's tertiary institutions about the percentage of male and female students who enrolled in different subjects in 1995.
The bar chart compares the percentages of 5 five different subjects majored by both male college
students
with their female counterparts in Australia's tertiary institutions in 1995. It is obvious that males were more inclined to major in science and engineering
whereas
subjects relating to arts and health were more favoured by females. Approximately 18% of boys chose engineering as their major at university, which was 9 times as great as that of girls. The trend was the same for
students
majoring in maths&sciences and computing, with 14%, 10% and 6%, 4% for both genders, respectively.
By contrast
, 10% of females selected arts &

as their majors, which,
although
12% of male
students
majored in it, was largely higher than their male counterparts.
Furthermore
, the proportion of boys majoring in health and education was 4% and 6%,
while
the figures more than tripled and almost doubled for girls, at 15% and 10%, individually. The gap for both genders studying business and accounting&economics was narrow , in which there were around 8% and 12% of either male or female
students
selecting the two majors.
