The diagram illustrates the metamorphosis of salmons as one kind of large fish.
Overall
, there are three living places of salmons, each of which contributes to different growing stages of the fish.
To begin
, 70 to 78 centimetres of adult salmons lay their eggs between small stones covered by reeds in a relatively slow-flowing stream in the upper terrain. The eggs are left for approximately five to six months before they are hatched into a fry, or a baby salmon with a quite small length between 3 to 8 cm.
Next,
the fries move to the lower river with a gradually faster flow and stay there for around four years until they are turning into a smolt, or a teenage one with slightly longer size to maximum 15 centimetres. The smolts
then
migrate to the open sea and live
accordingly
until a half of decade before returning to the stream as adult salmon. Their journey back to the river aims to conduct reproduction practice with their respective mate as their preceding generation does.
