The bar chart illustrates the
number
of prisoners in five
countries
in the period from 1930 to 1980.
Overall
, the highest level of imprisonment was in America and
Canada
,
while
the lowest was seen in New Zealand, Australia, and the UK.
It is clear that
the total
number
of people being imprisoned dropped slightly in the vast majority of these
countries
. Focusing first on the United States and
Canada
, in 1939, about 100 American citizens had been imprisoned,
whereas
for
Canada
, the corresponding figure was 120. By 1940, their
number
rose significantly to nearly 130 in America.
However
, in
Canada
, the level of imprisoned criminals dropped to slightly higher than 100, with its following decrease throughout the next years, with about 80 people in 1980. As for the United States, after a significant fall by nearly 40 units, by 1970, the
number
of prisoners increased sharply by the end of the period to almost 140. As for the remaining
countries
, about 30 British people were in prisons,
while
for Australia and New Zealand, the corresponding figures were considerably higher, with nearly 70 and 100 criminals. By 1970, the proportion of prisoners in these three
countries
was slightly lower than 70, with its increase to approximately 80 by 1980.
In contrast
, only less than 50 Australians were in prison
this
year.
