the diagram, South Asia, the main Asian area that had a majority of illiteracy inhabitants in 2000, hit 54% for females and roughly one-third for men. Arab states, the second one, reached just over 52% for women and just under 30% for men. Sub-Saharan Africa touched 48% for women and 30% for men. The graph demonstrates that East Asia and Oceania scored one-fifth for females and 8% for males.

, Latin America and the Caribbean Recorded almost the same fraction for both sexes at 10%. Developed countries reported approximately the same portion as nearly zero for both genders.
