Five months ago, you started renting an apartment on a six-month agreement. You now wish to stay in the apartment for longer than the six months you originally agreed with the owner. Write a letter to the owner of your apartment. In your letter - say how long you now want to rent the apartment for - explain why your plans have changed - tell the owner about a problem in the apartment

Fix grammar and use simple, common words. For example: change 'I am writing with my gratitude' to 'I am writing to discuss renewing the lease'.
tone
Polite and formal tone throughout.
content

structure
Uses a proper closing formula.
The Greeting

Depending on the style and aim of the letter, you will need to adapt your greeting.

Always start an informal letter in the ways:

  • Dear + name
  • Hi / Hello + name

‘Dear...’ is more appropriate, so stick with this.

For a formal letter there are two options for the greeting:

  • Use Dear Sir or Madam if you don’t know the name of the person you are writing to.
  • Use Dear + surname if you do know their name, e.g. Dear Mr Smith or Dear Mrs Jones.

Topic Vocabulary:
  • lease extension
  • rent renewal
  • tenancy agreement
  • extend contract
  • residential term
  • currently residing
  • plan adjustment
  • maintenance issue
  • residential upkeep
  • repair request
