 in four countries, namely the United Kingdom, Sweden, Italy and Portugal over a period of four decades, commencing from 1967. Generally speaking, the United Kingdom saw the highest levels of average CO2 emissions per
person
 among those countries during
this
 period. Simultaneously, in Portugal, it remained at a relatively low level compared with the figures for other countries at the same years. As it is seen from the graph, the average CO2 emissions per
person
 in the UK showed a downward trend with around 11 metric tonnes in 1967, and fell gradually to approximately 9 metric tonnes in 2007.
By contrast
, the figures for Italy and Portugal depicts an opposite trend. In 1967, only under 2 metric tonnes of CO2 emissions had been found in Portugal,
then
 it steadily increased to almost 5 metric tonnes by 1997. After that, it remained stable until 2007.
Similarly
, Italy has recorded just over 4 metric tonnes in 1967. Following by a rapid rise, it increased to 6 metric tonnes within 10 years,
then
 it climbed slowly to almost 8 metric tonnes and plateaued till the end of

 period. Sweden had experienced more fluctuations. In 1967, Sweden emitted about 9 metric tonnes CO2 per
person
, while it quickly hit its peak reaching up to 10 metric tonnes in 1977. In the following 30 years, it dropped down to under 6 metric tonnes, which was as the same amount as Portugal.
