As far as I’m concerned, success in any area is determined by having clear
goals
.
I bitterly remember my childhood, when I was living in Vladivostok, where I was born. I was studying at a public school located in an area where there was poverty and a high crime rate.
Besides
, I had strained relations with my
parents
. They did not recognize any of my achievements and any of my undertakings were suppressed. They were sure that I was an irresponsible young man who should not get a higher education and should go to work right after graduation, even though I studied perfectly.
However
, I did not lose hope of getting a higher education and did everything possible to enrol in the best place in Russia. To do
this
, I had to learn to solve complex olympiad problems in physics and mathematics on my own.
Thus
, I began to develop great willpower and became a strong, motivated person with clear
goals
for life. Those are the qualities I value the most in general and the ones I am most proud to have myself.
Having clear
goals
has helped me to stay motivated in various situations. One good example is my journey of being an active member of the faculty-student council while performing great in studying. I decided to join our student self-government body because of my prior experience of being neglected which turned into a strong desire to help others.
Thus
, I began to participate in various projects improving usual daily
students
’ lives.
For instance
, on a voluntary basis, I took up a project of dormitory renovation. In spite of the tight academic schedule, I managed my time and carried out
this
project due to strong motivation to help the ones around. The project was a success.
However
, my experience did not end with
this
case. During my 3rd year, I became the accommodation officer of the faculty.
This
position allowed me to deeper immerse myself in the countless problems of
students
.
For example
, there was a case with a foreign student from Egypt. She turned to me in need of a separate apartment in the dormitory for her family – her husband and their child of 5 years old. As they came to Russia in different periods of time they were
initially
put in different dormitories,
then
the administration managed to assign them to a room together but in a so-called “corridor-style” accommodation with a shared kitchen and restroom. Unfortunately, their child didn't take well the relocation and developed a chronic respiratory disease which needed constant treatment and various sanitary procedures to be carried out several times per day. The
parents
were torn between studying and taking care of an ill child and were seeking out help. They tried reaching out to different departments' administrations but technically there were no vacant apartments at the time. When I heard about their story I was deeply touched by the despair of young
parents
and decided to personally engage in their situation. I knew that our faculty truly didn't have any apartments left so I thoroughly analyzed the list of living
students
, came up with a decent scheme of how to rearrange already living
students
. All of them had a full right to decline my offer of changing apartments so I visited all of them personally and explained the situation. I had to get the message across to every single one of them for my scheme to work. It was hard and time-consuming but eventually, everyone agreed to my plan and the family got an opportunity to move to better conditions. I remember the pure joy of my
parents
and the sincere astonishment of those who didn't believe my plan to be feasible.
This
case along with many others led to my recognition by fellow
students
and eventually resulted in me being elected to become the chairman of the faculty-student council which I viewed as a great opportunity to make a contribution to

society.
In
this
I covered examples of how being confident and sticking to clear
goals
helped me to deal with various situations. I wanted to emphasize how these qualities determine me in different aspects of life and I am looking forward to applying these in my current and future research and generally in my academic career.
