The diagrams below show the life cycle of a species of large fish called the salmon. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
This
diagram demonstrates four developmental phases of a salmon
life cycle.
In general, salmon
needs about 9 to 10 years to fully grow from an egg to an adult fish. During their own development, they live in quite different environments from fresh water in the high mountain streams to saltwater in the ocean.
After 5 to 6 months, fertilized eggs hatch into the newborn called the fries. This
kind of salmon
has a length of about 3 to 8 centimetres. From the upper river, where they hatched, fries swim down to the lower level.
4 years from then
, the fries live in the lower river and then
develop into the smolts. When these smolts go into their next phase, those 12 to 15 centimetres fish will swim into the open sea.
After growing 5 years in the ocean, which is 50 per cent of the life cycle, they have developed into adult salmon
, which are 70 to 76 cm in length. Since they fully develop, those fishes return to where they were born, which is the upper river, to lay eggs in reeds and small stones, where a new cycle beginsSubmitted by cathyngo1512 on
