letter in response to your advertisement posted in the “New Town” Australian magazine. I would like to express my interest in living with your family and looking after your ward for six months. Let me explain my situation to you in detail below. I am new in Melbourne City and have been looking for a part-time job for a few weeks.

job interests me not only because I love kids but

because I would like to learn about the country’s culture and traditions as I am studying master’s in psychology at a renowned institute. I believe I would be a suitable person to employ as I have prior experience in child care in my home town.
Moreover

Having said that, since it is only a few hours of work, during my free time, I would be working on my assignments and attending classes in order to complete my education. Please do let me know if you have any questions. Looking forward to a positive response. Yours faithfully, Kathleen Holst

The Greeting

Depending on the style and aim of the letter, you will need to adapt your greeting.

Always start an informal letter in the ways:

  • Dear + name
  • Hi / Hello + name

‘Dear...’ is more appropriate, so stick with this.

For a formal letter there are two options for the greeting:

  • Use Dear Sir or Madam if you don’t know the name of the person you are writing to.
  • Use Dear + surname if you do know their name, e.g. Dear Mr Smith or Dear Mrs Jones.
