the graph shows the proportion of population age 65 and over between 1940 and 2040 in three different countries USA, Japan and Sweden .
The line chart illustrates the growth of the elderly
population
in Japan, Sweden and the USA from 1940 to the present, with projections to 2040. As an overall
trend, the numbers have only grown over the years
and will continue to rise
in the future in all three countries.
Less than 1 in 10 people in the United States were inhabited by the older population
in the 40s, a figure that has only continued to rise
, peaking at 15% in the 1980s. Since then
, the country has seen a slight falling fad till the 2020s. It is predicted to rise
again in the coming future, to up to a quarter of the total population
.
Sweden on the other hand
has always seen an increasing trend, starting from 7% in the 40s to about 20% in 2015. This
country too, is forecast to experience a rise
in the numbers by the year 2040.
Japan is slightly peculiar to analyse. In contrast
with the other nations, senior citizens have decreased from 1940 (5%), reaching an all-time low near the 90s (3%), from which point it slowly started to pick up the pace, reaching 10% in the present years
. It is predicted to sharply rise
to about a fourth of the population
in just a few years
and reach almost 30% by the year 2040.
In conclusion, the life expectancies of the older population
have risen over the years
and will continue to rise
in the future as well.Submitted by aishvaryaaishu205 on
