The graph shows the quantities of goods transported ini the uk between 1974 and 2002 by four different modes of transport
The line chart compares the amount of goods delivered by four types of vehicles in the UK from 1974 to 2002.
Obviously, the
overall
quantities of goods witnessed a significant increase during the period shown, in which road plays a key role in commodity transportation, accounting for the majority all the time, while
transporting by pipeline was the least choice albeit the growth to a certain extent.
In 1974, approximately 70 million
tonnes
of merchandise was transported by road transport, which was largely higher than the rest of its counterparts. Three decades later, the figure approached 100 million
tonnes
in 2002. By contrast
, the amount of commodities transported by pipeline was negligible in the beginning, which saw an exponential increase during the 28 years, peaking at around 22 million
tonnes
in 1995 and remaining unchanged then
. However
, it was still the lowest reading compared with others.
The number of goods transported by waterway and railway was almost the same at first,
which levelled out until the year 1978. There was considerable growth for water transportation from then
on, rising by more than 20 million
tonnes
, at 60 million
tonnes
in 2002, while
the number of commodities transported by rail finally
bounded back to almost the same number, after some fluctuations.Submitted by 76805977 on
