, over the thirty years of the data collection period, the number
of male students varied, ending up at around 900,000 in 1991 from a starting point of one million in 1970.
The number

who joined full-time education almost doubled from around 100,000 in 1970-71 to nearly 200,000 in 1990-91. For women, the tendency was rising more sharply than the men
during the first decade, but from 1981 to 1991 the tendency became much slower and made up
