The graphs below show the number of men and women in full and part-time employment in Australia between 1973 and 1993.
The
overall
trend in both male and female employment in Australia from 1973 to 1993 shows that more females were engaged in part-time jobs than males. To start with full-time employees, the trend of the
percentage
of
men
and
women
employed in 1973 remained relatively similar to that in 1993. The
percentage
of
men
working in full-time jobs generally decreased by about 10% over twenty years
while
the the
percentage
of
women
employed within
this
period varied. The figures for both genders started at around 50% in 1973 for age groups 15-19 and 65+.
Men
employed from ages 25 to 59 reached the highest level from 1973 to 1993 at around 85%. Meanwhile, the
percentage
of
women
working full time is observed to be less for those in their thirties
while
more of them worked full time in their late twenties and forties. Moving on to part-timers, the
percentage
of
men
and
women
employed increased in 1993 compared to 1973 in general but varied significantly upon closer inspection. The trend for
men
working part-time remains similar
such
that a higher
percentage
of them worked at the ages of 15 to 19, with around 10% in 1973 increasing to 22% in 1993. For
women
, the highest
percentage
of them worked between the ages of 30 to 50 in part-time jobs.
