It’s clear that the percentage of elderly people in these countries is expected to increase to almost 25% of the respective population in 2040.
Looking at the information in more detail, we can see that in 1940, the population of people aged 65 and over stood at 9% in the USA

and just 5% in Japan

, when the figure for the Western countries experienced a steady increase to around 15% in 1985. Japan
