The line chart illustrates the quantities of good transported in the UK via four different modes between 1974 and 2002. Total quantity of goods
together with
all modes of transport
except rail experienced significant growth during the period.
Out of the four modes, road transport
kept leading the way: it rose slowly from 70 million
tonnes
in 1974 to around 80 in the early 1990s, and then
stayed flat for a few years before jumping to almost 100 in the end
. Water transport
also
experienced growth although
in a quite different pattern: it stayed at 40 million
tonnes
for a few years in the beginning, soared to almost 60, and then
stayed stable for a decade until the early 1990s; after that, water transport
dipped slightly before started climbing in 1999, reaching up to over 60 in the end
. Last
but not the least, pipeline grew from almost nonexistence to above 20 million
tonnes
, though still the lowest, in the end
.
Rail started at the same level as water transport
but went in the opposite direction. It kept going down and hit a bottom of around 25 million
tonnes
in 1995, and then
bounced back to slightly above 40 in the end
