This
graph presents the volume of commodities delivered by four types of
transport
in the UK during the period 1974 to 2002. As shown, road
transport
had occupied a dominant status for 28 years. There was a dramatic increase from around 70
million
tonnes
in 1974 to almost 100
million
tonnes
in 2002. The figure for waterways
also
showed a rise in general in the period, with
initially
about 39
million
tonnes
in 1974. Its carriage stood at around 60
million
tonnes
since 1982 and
then
climbed to a maximum of 63
million
tonnes
in 2002.
In addition
, the data on railway
transport
shows differently, with the number of goods remaining around 40
million
tonnes
at both the beginning and the end. Its carriage sharply decreased from 1978 to 1986, and from 1992 to 1996 as well. The pipeline is seen as the least popular
transport
, with only 4
million
tonnes
in 1974. It kept a steady uprise till 1995 when 22
million
tonnes
of goods are transported and levelled off at 22 in 2002. To summarise, all four kinds of
transport
illustrate an upward trend in delivering goods during the period,
while
rail had a different pattern.
Furthermore
, the road leads to the field.
