In towns and cities across the world, vast retail chains are steadily replacing the family-run shops that once served every neighbourhood. While these chains undoubtedly bring lower prices and greater convenience, I largely disagree that they benefit local communities, because the economic gains they offer are outweighed by the loss of local livelihoods and the social ties that independent retailers sustain.
