To begin with, the most important factor for one to succeed is undoubtedly the technical understanding of the concerned field, without which no one can actually survive in a job. Every job demands core technical skills, in some way or the other. Here language proficiency can surely be an additional advantage but not in anyway, an essential condition all the time. For instance, a staff nurse working in a hospital ICU, is expected to take care of the assigned patients for which the clinical knowledge and ability to rightfully interpret the prescription of the attending physician are the required qualities. An excellent English communication, although appreciable, is not that necessary as long as instructions are correctly comprehended.

Personally, I can imagine how hard the social situation where we have to live in a foreign country. The biggest problem is when our vocabularies capabilities to understand and deliver messages are limitless. A simple example I took it from my experiences traveling to Singapore. I asked one senior janitor about what time the bus shuttle will arrive next, but his English is poor. As a result, I misunderstood his information which I thought 'we have to wait 10-15 minutes for the next shuttle. In reality, the bus shuttle was available at any time. The problem would increase if you also did not know their culture. As an illustration, if one thought hand shaking is a polite way to greet, but the other one from another country will not think the same way.
